I've played with it and have my own settings on the GEQ but there is no science to it. I start with the YPAO results and go from there.

I think I listened to receivers and car stereos set up with the EQ set to a V shaped setting for so long when I was younger that I think thats the way music should sound. You know the lows are pushed up and gradually go to 0 and then the high settings go back up the other way so the display looks like a V. What are other Yamaha owners doing? This is particularly useful at low volumes when I don't care about deep bass and the THX amp keeps kicking off due to lack of signal.

On my RX-V I have two programmable settings from the remote that allow different configurations but I don't play with them much. On mine you can view the curves and they are anything but smiley-face eq curves, usually some deep notch at some mid-bass frequency room resonace probably and a gradual ramp up in HF, corresponding to the K77 cut offs.

I usually turn my subs down and do YPAO and then turn them up some. That said I don't listen to rap or expect my house to shake, I just like a good firm bass sound. I use the front setting. Either way, your method of fine tuning your subs level sounds fine. But the old 'smiley face' graphic eq curve is rarely the right setting for any system or any room. Plus there is nothing wrong with tweaking to meet your exact needs. I have some experience I tweak the settings for ME I've tried all three and it seems that YPAO really takes the bass away.

The highs and mids sound great but the LF really is gone. I use my receiver's Audyssey to calculate distance and output but turn off any EQing it does. I run everything flat. If you turn off the EQ after running Audyssey don't you lose any correction it made to account for issues in your room?

My room isn't ideal so I know I need help there!

I've read all over on the internet that people are complaining about YPAO and other systems making the music sound dull and low on bass. Which makes me think like I was trying to say above that people are so used to manually setting the EQs themselves and have come to expect exaggerated sounding music.

I've read the manual of my about YPAO and also spent some time on the AVS thread for the trying to learn a little more again I say again because when I got the I read everything I could but once its set up a guy seems to forget a lot of stuff and I've setting it up a few different ways to see what I like. I think I struggle with manual tweeking because I'm not sure what frequencies to adjust and pretty soon you've moved a few all over and you have no idea what to do next! I'd like to be able to clear out the GEQ and start fresh but I'm not sure how.

I looked at the EQ it applied and the graph was all over the place. No doubt it is attempting for a flatter response but I like how things sound with it turned off. Most people are used to listening with heavier than flat bass, that's why you probably don't like how things sound after you run YPAO.Good sound is dependent just as much on doing the setup correctly, than it is on buying great gear.

Of course it did…. Some of the advice below can be applied generally to all receivers. Before anything else, you should go into the Manual Setup section under Speaker Setup and set the amp assignment correctly, dependent on which speaker terminals you used for which speakers and whether you used external amplification.

The below is the correct version with number 1 position being in the centre of the couch or chair. Some versions of this diagram were incorrectly putting number 1 on the side of the couch. If you were configuring one seating position, a chair or arm chair, do the above exactly but divide up the chair equally or do some positions to the left and right of the chair at ear height as well as just a bit in front and above ear height.

If you have multiple couches, I recommend, doing more positions on the couch that will be your primary listening position and doing the rest on the other couch es following the above principles. YPAO in higher end Yamaha receivers will allow you to do something called an angle measurement. You will have to do this in Position 1 above, but use the little boomerang that came with your receiver like the one below. The positions are marked.

Position 1 on the boomerang must face towards your front speakers, while 2 and 3 towards the back. The boomerang can be fixed onto a tripod as well.

I really recommend this. Otherwise the taping method works here as well. Measure each position by following the on-screen guidance. Even though your speakers may be able to do frequencies below 80hz, it is not recommended to go below this cross over for movies as those frequencies are hard to control even from the subwoofer alone. However, your milage may vary.

As a rule of thumb, if Yamaha configured your speakers with a high crossover, you should not lower it e. If you lower the crossover, you may still get an uneven response or may not hear certain frequencies at all as now the subwoofer is not playing them back either. If the crossover set is much higher than you know the speakers can reproduce, you may want to repeat the setup routine paying attention to mic placement.

If they still come up short, think about aiming the speakers with the woofers pointing at the main listening positions. I have heard different views on this but it seems to me like those that have their surround speakers at ear height seem to have less trouble with this than those who have them somewhat higher than ear height or further away than the front speakers.

I believe both Audyssey and Dolby researched this and found it to be true, however. I find the same when listening in my home cinema where the surround speakers are somewhat higher than my front speakers while my presence speakers are on a third plane altogether near the ceilings.

I normally increase surround and surround back channels by dB dependent on how loud someone is listening to the system in general. Recently I had to unplug all the wires from the receiver and plug them back in again amp and all speakers remain in the same position as before. When plugging everything back in I had the option of 2 sub points 1 front and 2 rear.

Due to some different furniture in my room I decided to do auto speaker setup using YPAO with the same microphone in same position as was used when the sound engineer did it orginally. When doing this there seems to be a problem with the sub, as the results always end up in DB and when it does the test sound on the sub its really faint and also the visual on the screen is showing the sub is on the left hand side of the room, when its actually on the right.

I have the following questions 1 have I correctly setup the sub. When testing it when playing a movie, its still lacking a lot of bass. Thanks in advance.

DrHarvey12 Well-known Member. Hello Devag, Just thought I would post to confirm what Stewjoy said. The onscreen graphic showing the subwoofer to the left or to the right is just for demonstration purposes - in no way does it need to reflect actual subwoofer positioning.

Only the "Layout" subwoofer setting actually determines where the receiver believes the subwoofers to be.Yamaha is one of the few companies that makes the instruments that eventually get played back on one of its audio systems. This system quickens the calibration and equalization process, setting and saving these calibrated settings in memory. Although setting up the speakers in a Yamaha system is not unlike other surround systems, the YPAO setup is integral to getting the best results.

Determine the wire lengths required for each speaker run from the receiver. Cut these lengths using the wire snips. Twist up the binding posts on the rear of the Yamaha receiver. Insert the appropriate speaker wire into its respective terminal. Twist down the binding posts until the wires are secure. Unscrew the binding posts on the speakers. Insert the other end of the wires coming from the receiver into the proper speaker.

Screw down the posts to secure the wires. Plug in the subwoofer cable from the "SUB" out on the rear panel of the Yamaha receiver. Route this cable to the "LFE" in on the rear of the subwoofer.

Plug the sub into AC power, turn it on, then set the volume knob to the center position. Insert the YPAO microphone into the front 3.

Place the microphone on a camera tripod at ear level.

Thread the YPAO mic onto the male threads on the tripod, with the mic pointing directly at the ceiling. Press "Enter" on the Yamaha remote.
